The essence of Re-value is the revaluation of residual materials in the production of natural stone. Each piece of stone has its own unique shapes, colours and patterns. This is because natural stone originates from the earth’s crust that varies around the world. The contrast in value between pieces of natural stone can be large, which is reflected in the esthetical, cultural and financial value. A big slab of stone has a great financial value, whereas the residual material is seen as worthless, even though it has gone through the same production process. Re-value aims to give back the lost value to the leftover stone. Some cultural and esthetical value can be reclaimed by creating a contemporary and functional design.
The residual material that remains after the processing of natural stone consists of different sizes. I divided these pieces into 4 groups from small too big, for every group I made a suitable design.
Re-value consists of 3 different designs: Table Layers, Table Mountain and the Wall Shelves.
Table Layers is made from the biggest and second smallest pieces of residual material.
By cutting a residual natural stone piece in half you have always a straight side, which can be used as a table top. For the biggest pieces of residual material, I made a drawing where three cutting lines are visible, so the bigger pieces are also the table legs. For the smaller pieces I made a drawing with one cutting line, so they are always only cut in half. These smaller pieces can be placed in between the larger pieces, creating a lager table surface.
Re-value Table Layers is a multifunctional product that can be disassembled and assembled according to the wishes of the user.
